New York Technology Leaders and Innovators Honored at 2014 Best of New York Awards

Sept. 9, 2014 – Providing real-time data on NYC’s subway and bus arrivals, connecting New Yorkers with lost money through social media, and a patient tracking system during evacuations were just three of the creative technology solutions for which New York and New York City government departments were honored at the 2014 Best of New York Awards.

Presented by e.Republic’s Center for Digital Government in partnership with the state of New York, the Best of New York Awards program recognizes state and local government organizations for their standout contributions, best practices and works of distinction in information technology that improve citizen services.

Daniel Travers, Project Manager at the NYS Office of Information Technology Services, was awarded this year’s Best of New York Leadership Award for his successful consolidation and streamlining of IT for NYS including: upgrading the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) data centers into NYS’s new data center, modernizing WCB’s infrastructure and business processes and overseeing the transition of 2700 Uninsured Employer Fund cases to a third-party administrator.

“People expect government to meet them where they are these days, and for many, that is at their computer or mobile device,” said Todd Sander, executive director of the Center for Digital Government.  “This year’s Best of New York winners have shown across the board that innovative ideas, along with collaborative planning and execution, improve outcomes for citizens in important ways.  It is an honor to present these public servants as this year’s winners.”

Award recipients were selected from entries to the 2014 Best of New York Awards program. Winner selections were made based on criteria that included collaboration between agencies, innovative use of technology and the improvement of services to citizens or state and local government employees.
