Aiken, S.C.'s New Real-Time, Data-Driven System to Help Address Crime

Information from multiple information resources available in real-time will enable any member of the Department of Public Safety to easily access it at any time.

(TNS) -- The Aiken Department of Public Safety will be implementing a brand new data system that is expected to help make the community a safer place for everyone.

This new, enhanced system, which will be operational within the next few weeks, will address crime through the implementation of a real time, data driven, crime management and operations tool, said Sgt. Jennifer Hayes with Aiken Public Safety.

In 2016, Aiken Public Safety contracted with Superion to complete a much needed update to its Mobile Computer Terminals, Computer Aided Dispatch, and Records Management software systems.

"Through this process, the department gained access to a vast amount of under-utilized data," Hayes said. "In order to better utilize this information, the department will be installing a state of the art, data analysis software system that will allow for instantaneous access to this data."

This two main beneficiaries in new addition - the agency and the community.

"We hope this new system will help with the relationship between us and members of the community we protect," Hayes said.

Information from multiple information resources will be available on a real-time basis which will enable any member of the agency to easily access it at any time in order to better serve the community, she said.

"Say you want to look at data from this week or say you want to look at last week, or no you want to look at data for the whole month at a time - It won't be something I have to go in and run those statistics each time you change your mind on a date range."

The department will now be more readily able to identify crime trends and address them by shifting resources- assigning officers to specific neighborhoods, or putting undercover assets at events known for high levels of crime.

"Something that used to take days or weeks can now be accomplished in a matter of minutes," Hayes said. "Combining the knowledge and experience of police officers with the ability of analytical software to sort through the vast amounts of records available to law enforcement agencies creates a powerful, additional resource for officer’s tool belts."

With this system, the department’s accountability to itself and the community will be increased, she said.

Real-time crime statistics, as well as the department’s efforts to address that crime throughout the city, will be readily available to our citizens and the general public night and day.

"We hope that citizens utilize this information to strengthen their neighborhood groups as well as their partnerships with the department," she said.

Once the system goes live, residents can access it by going to www.cityofaikensc.gov.
