With the proliferation of smartphones and tablets, laptops and even desktop computers, the amount of e-waste produced in the United States is astronomical: In 2010 alone, the U.S. disposed of nearly 2.5 million tons of e-waste, according to an
infographic from MetroFax, which also points out that nearly 1.8 million tons of that waste was thrown into landfills or incinerated.
And disposing of such items improperly can be hazardous, as electronic devices of contain lead, mercury and lithium, to name a few.
