Is Emergency Management a Profession?

I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on this piece.

As emergency managers we like to think of ourselves as having a profession.  But, as I relate in my Eric's Corner Column, Emergency Management Magazine for July-August Is Emergency Management a Profession? I don't think we really are a profession.

I'll be interested to hear your comments and thoughts on the issue of highly qualified "managers" being appointed to be emergency management directors.  Is it OK?  Or, is it a slap in the face of what we think our profession is today?

Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
