Montreal Metro Selects Networked Video Solution to Enhance Security of Mass Transit System

System will enable security personnel to monitor movement from a central location, protect passengers and deter crime across the railway

The Societe de Transport de Montreal, which is responsible for operating the city's mass transit system, including the Montreal Metro and bus lines, is deploying a networked video surveillance system to enhance passenger security and deter crime across the Montreal Metro system.

The Montreal Metro system provides underground access to the city of Montreal and its suburbs via four train lines averaging approximately 800,000 passenger trips every weekday. The Metro also provides access to Montreal's "indoor city," a widespread underground network of pedestrian promenades that connects major downtown buildings. The Verint Networked Video solution will enable Metro surveillance officers to enhance security of the underground rail system by centrally monitoring passenger platforms and certain parts of the track from the Metro's central operations center.

"The Montreal Metro is a source of pride for our city, and has been designated as one of the safest systems in North America by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA)," said Claude Dauphin, chairman of the board of directors for the Societe de Transport de Montreal. "But in this era of heightened awareness, it's imperative for us to continually enhance security and provide the safest possible travel environment for our riders." The networked video solution will enable Metro security personnel to monitor movement, protect passengers and deter crime across the rail system, Dauphin said.
