The Louisiana Technology Council, along with the Super Bowl Host Committee, are behind a Super Bowl-themed hackathon event set to take place Jan. 11-13, 2013. The event aims to match the talents of area developers with the bevy of Web app ideas that have been suggested to date via the Codemkrs SUPER Challenge website. According to a press release from event host Peter Mayer Advertising, Inc., ideas so far include a public transit locator app, a restaurant availability app and a digital tip jar to demonstrate appreciation for local performers.
Participants are eligible for prizes including cash, memorabilia from the big game, meals at local restaurants and area hotel stays.
Event organizer Travis Laurendine explained that the hackathon gives the local tech community a chance to be involved in the Super Bowl, even if they're not attending the game. "I think a hackathon will galvanize the technology community to create something special that will enhance the overall visitor experience," he said.
Winners will be announced at an award ceremony on January 13, following deliberations by a panel of judges to include New Orleans CIO Allen Square, Jr., and Loyola University Professor Elliott Adams.
