North Bronx Healthcare Network Chooses Image Management System

NEW YORK -- The North Bronx Healthcare Network (NBHN), one of six regional networks established by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, has purchased 128 terabytes of EMC Centera content addressed storage (CAS) to provide faster, more cost-efficient access to archived digital medical images such as X-rays, MRIs and ultrasounds.

NBHN also acquired another 30 terabytes of networked storage and open management software to deliver greater performance, availability and control of its growing information infrastructure.

"A key objective is gaining management control over our storage, which is spread out across 100 different application servers supporting 4,000 desktop devices," said Daniel Morreale, NBHN's CIO. "Consolidating our storage will allow us to monitor our storage utilization and anticipate storage needs for our applications."

NBHN, which consists of Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital and affiliated community healthcare centers, will manage the storage with a picture archiving and communications system. The storage will serve as the long-term repository for cardiology and radiology images, .wav and .jpg files, and other media. After images have existed for three years, NBHN will move them from its other storage area network and network attached systems to Centera.

The hospital network now has a 170-terabyte infrastructure that supports medical records, physician order entry, healthcare information system and other applications.
