Year in Review 2024: AI Impacts All Areas of Gov Tech

In March, Los Angeles Unified, the second largest school district in the country, launched a new individualized learning platform boosted by AI. At a press conference, Ed, a sunglasses-toting sunshine mascot, appeared alongside Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, who had earlier asked parents to “Imagine the power of artificial intelligence and comprehensive data working together to personalize an action plan for the benefit of our teachers, our students, our parents.” Societally, we are starting to grasp the transformative power of AI, but as the L.A. Unified example also demonstrates, forward progress, though hard fought, is still fragile. The company behind the student adviser chatbot Ed is in severe financial distress, forcing the district to pull the plug on that aspect of the project.
