Boyce sells financial and ERP technology to cities, schools, utilities and libraries. Boyce traces its roots back to 1899 and was involved in bookbinding, printing and other traditional services for municipal governments.
Boyce has at least 1,200 customers.
BS&A is a bit younger than that — the company launched in 1987 — but it serves more than 2,300 local governments, who use the firm’s technology for such tasks as budgeting, tax assessments, contracts and licensing.
The deal follows a “significant growth investment” in 2023 in BS&A from Serent Capital.
"Expanding in the Midwest is important because local governments are the backbone of their communities, but many are still using outdated on-premises systems," said Chad Harryman, CEO of BS&A Software, in an email interview with Government Technology. "They need modern, cloud-based solutions — not just to improve efficiency, but also to provide better services to their residents."
With this acquisition, Boyce customers who use the company’s Keystone software can access BS&A’s cloud-based ERP platform.
The company also will now set up a new Schools Division “to continue Boyce’s long-standing service and solutions for Indiana schools,” according to a statement.
It added that Boyce Cloud Schools — which used to be called Komputrol — and Boyce’s new “Employee Hub” will continue as a “core offerings.”
“Boyce’s Schools business has been a cornerstone of our history and will continue to be a key part of our future,” said Casey Stanley, president of the Boyce Schools Division, in the statement. “With BS&A’s backing, we’re in a stronger position than ever to accelerate growth, enhance our solutions, like the new Employee Hub, and maintain our leadership in Indiana school finance.”
Boyce leaders, including Stanley, CEO Jason Harrington and Chief Customer Officer Jay Moorman will stay on after the acquisition to help guide the new endeavor.
Harryman did not rule out further acquisitions this year.
"We’re always evaluating opportunities that align with our mission to support local governments with modern, efficient solutions," Harryman said. "If the right opportunity comes along that strengthens our offerings and benefits our customers, we would be open to exploring those options."
