Jacob and fellow New Urban Mechanics co-chair Chris Osgood have developed innovative mobile applications for to improve city services for Boston residents. Now as Living Cities’ urban technologist in residence, Jacob will help expand the organization’s relationships with municipal governments, with a goal of improving the lives of low-income people in U.S. cities.

“Nigel has established himself as a national leader in municipal innovation,” said Arthur Burris, Living Cities’ director of Public Sector Innovation, in a statement. “We are pleased that his work with Living Cities will allow us to partner more effectively with cities across the country to accelerate innovation and improve results for city residents.”
In addition to his engagement responsibilities, Jacob will also advise cities that are interested in expanding innovation concepts throughout their municipal operations. Jacob is charged with leading Living Cities’ work to advising cities interested in embedding innovation into their municipal operations.
Jacob’s role with Living Cities is on a part-time basis, so he’ll continue his work with the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics in Boston. Jacob was named a Public Official of the Year by Governing in 2011. Governing and Government Technology are owned by the same parent company, e.Republic, Inc.
