Google announced plans to expand its high-speed fiber network out of Kansas City, Kan., and into three neighboring cities in Johnson County, Kan. Google officially welcomed the cities of Westwood, Westwood Hills and Mission Woods on Aug. 3, although dates for when the network will be available in the areas has not yet been announced. More than 2,000 people live in the new coverage areas.
The three cities reached agreements with Google that allow the company access to infrastructure, while waiving permitting fees. All three cities agreed to terms with Google within a few days, through a city council vote in each city.
By Aug. 13, more than 60 neighborhoods in Kansas City had registered for access to the 1 gigabit network, reported Bizjournals.com. Google has said it will connect “fiberhoods” that show the most interest by the end of a six-week marketing rally that ends Sept. 9.
