Overview
Laketran, the regional public transportation system in Lake County, Ohio, serves more than 750,000 riders annually. Newly installed fast charging systems keep the system’s electric buses moving without the need to return to base for traditional overnight charging.
Impact
Laketran recently transitioned 60% of its local route bus fleet to zero-emission vehicles, a move made possible by investing in on-route charging stations that recharge electric buses in three to six minutes.
10 electric buses have replaced the majority of Laketran’s diesel bus fleet — reducing fuel costs, engine noise and vehicle emissions. The battery-operated buses will also cut ongoing maintenance costs compared to diesel-powered vehicles.
Advice
When possible, transportation agencies should work together to develop and implement vehicle maintenance training procedures.
