As part of AT&T’s Connected Learning initiative and its collaboration with Human-I-T, more than 100 students in need at Macomb Community College were presented with free laptops.
“At Macomb Community College, our mission is to transform lives and communities through the power of education, enrichment, and economic development,” said Carrie Jeffers, vice president of student services at MCC. “Part of our commitment is helping make sure our students have the necessary tools for success.”
The refurbished laptops, funded by an AT&T contribution to Human-I-T, were provided to pre-selected Macomb college students with digital divide barriers to help support them in their educational journey.
“We are thrilled to partner with AT&T to give away 150 laptops to students who need them most,” Jeffers said.
In Michigan, it’s estimated that 11 percent of households don’t have access to the Internet or connected devices needed to fully participate in the online world — an issue known as the digital divide.
“These laptops will be a game-changer for these college students,” said David Lewis, president of AT&T Michigan. “Connectivity has become a key to nearly every door of opportunity, but millions of Americans still don’t have access to technology or high-speed Internet. We’re excited to help connect these students to new opportunities in our digital world to help them succeed in college and the workforce.”
This effort is part of the AT&T Connected Learning® initiative to help address the digital divide through Internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption. AT&T is committing $5 billion to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed Internet by 2030.
