According to an NYU news release, the joint research initiative aims to strengthen an existing partnership between the two institutions and initiate a conversation between leaders from academia, government and industry about AI and digital governance. The announcement said the new research initiative was first made official Sept. 21 at the Digital Vision Forum on NYU’s Greenwich Village campus, where NYU President Linda Mills and KAIST President Kwang Hyung Lee signed an agreement to collaborate, with officials such as South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol and U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer in attendance.
“We are honored to bring together leaders in government, academia and industry to commemorate a vital and historic partnership that will propel scholarship and advancements in technology,” NYU President Linda Mills said in a public statement. "We are thrilled by this partnership, which exemplifies both NYU’s commitment to global learning and research as well as our role in fueling the growth of New York City’s tech, science and innovation sector."
The research initiative comes amid efforts to strengthen AI and technology research collaboration between the U.S. and South Korea and as higher ed institutions across the U.S. — such as the University of Texas system, Colby College, Purdue University and others — expand academic and research programming centered on AI technology. According to the announcement, the research initiative, dubbed the ROK Institutions-NYU AI and Digital Partnership, will be headquartered at NYU and accelerate ongoing AI research at both institutions.
