The University of Rochester’s business school will launch a new online master’s degree program this fall with the aim of training IT professionals to leverage data analytics and artificial intelligence tools.

According to a recent news release, the school’s new Online Master’s of Science in Business Analytics & Applied AI program will combine analytical training with insights about artificial intelligence applications in business. The 14-month online program, set to begin in August, will include synchronous and asynchronous coursework designed to upskill working IT professionals.

“AI technology is rapidly transforming the world of business,” Sevin Yeltekin, dean of Simon Business School, said in a public statement. “Our Online MS in Business Analytics & Applied AI is uniquely positioned to provide professionals with the advanced skills needed to leverage AI in data analysis and decision-making processes to add value to their organization.”

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in data science are projected to grow 35 percent from 2022 to 2032. What’s more, a recent Amazon study predicted that advances in machine learning and the development of generative AI tools like ChatGPT will streamline daily operations across industries and workplaces by the end of the decade.

The news release said the idea for the new degree program came from feedback from tech industry leaders, including one-on-one discussions and focus groups with alumni, about how to provide training for students to gain skills that are most in demand among employers today. The program’s curriculum will include courses on topics such as AI in business, analytics-driven decisions, and marketing analytics, with a focus on practical applications for emerging technologies in business.

“The launch of the Online MS in Business Analytics & Applied AI marks a significant milestone in our continuous effort to offer cutting-edge, relevant education that aligns with industry demands,” Mitch Lovett, senior associate dean of education and innovation at the university’s Simon Business School, said in a public statement. “This program is designed with direct input from industry leaders to blend the analytical precision of business analytics with the transformative power of AI to empower professionals to become leaders in this dynamic field.”

According to the news release, applications for the program are now open to professionals looking for an education in analytics and AI that could advance their careers in data science. Candidates are also eligible to participate in a virtual simulation competition called Simon Games, where participants will have the chance to win a full-tuition scholarship to the program. More information is available on the program’s website.
