The ed-tech company Discovery Education will expand its global reach to include data analytics and professional development tools for math and reading classes, company officials announced Tuesday.

Discovery Education, based in North Carolina, will acquire DreamBox Learning, an ed-tech company in Washington state that serves more than 6 million K-12 students and about 600,000 educators across the nation, according to a news release. The transaction is expected to close by the end of this year. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Through its curriculum, content and digital textbook tools, Discovery Education serves about 45 million K-12 students and 4.5 million educators in more than 100 different nations, according to the news release. DreamBox is the company’s fifth acquisition in four years, most recently including the science-education company Pivot Interactives and the math application DoodleLearning in August 2022.

“Combining an expertise in learning science with adaptive, effective instructional solutions, DreamBox Learning’s solutions can help students excel regardless of who they are or where they live,” Discovery Education CEO Jeremy Cowdrey said in a public statement. “Through this latest acquisition, Discovery Education is better positioned to broaden its impact on student success by providing our existing network of partner school systems access to DreamBox Learning’s collection of supplemental math, reading and professional-learning solutions.”

According to its website, DreamBox Learning’s technology for both math and reading is dashboard-based, allowing teachers to monitor student performance in real time. The tool produces lesson recommendations for teachers and analyzes student and class accomplishments in comparison with their respective state standards. It also has a family dashboard that allows parents to track their child’s progress.

Jessie Woolley-Wilson, DreamBox Learning president and chief executive officer, said her company set up shop in 2006 with a mission to use intelligent adaptive learning technology “to transform the way the world learns.” She called the acquisition a significant next step toward achieving that goal.

“Building upon our existing math and reading solutions, we can now leverage Discovery Education’s highly scalable global footprint to reach more students and deepen our partnerships with educators around the world,” Woolley-Wilson said in a public statement.
