District officials did not specify when the breach occurred, but said the school district’s chief information officer identified the suspicious activity on Monday.
IT staff quickly responded by trying to contain the situation and worked with third-party cybersecurity experts and law enforcement officers to investigate what happened, the district said in a press release.
At this time, there is no evidence that any student’s or staff member’s personal data was accessed or misused, the district said. If investigators later determine that anyone’s personal information was accessed or misused, those individuals will be notified.
The district is continuing to work with third-party cybersecurity experts to conduct a “thorough” forensic investigation into the incident, the district said. IT staff have already begun strengthening the district’s network to prevent future cybersecurity breaches.
“I want to assure everyone in the Fall River Public Schools community that we take cybersecurity and the protection of students’ and staff members’ personal data extremely seriously,” Superintendent Tracy Curley said in the release. “Our investigation into this incident remains ongoing, and we will provide additional updates as appropriate.”
