I'd like to invite you to share your "aha moments' with me and the other people (almost 1,000) who subscribe to Disaster-Zone, plus those who just "drop in" occasionally. I'll define "aha moments" for you. They are typically not tied to a time of the day. For me sometimes they come in the shower. They can be ideas, philosophies, or concepts that just all seem to fall into place as you are trying to solve a problem.
Timothy Doyle, my Public Education Program Manager at King County, shared one with me. That has stuck over time. Basically, it is that we should get people prepared to "shelter in place" at their home. The kicker is that we are not talking about the "chemical in the air" shelter in place, but the disaster preparedness kind. That people, if they have prepared their home and it is "livable" not full of flood water, etc., the best place for them to be is at home. Moving them to a mass care facility just because they are "not prepared" is not the best solution. Traditional shelters should be reserved for those forced out of their homes.
