By now you know I love drones and their employment for emergency management purposes. Now those same drones are being sent to Ukraine by the United States: “
What to know about the 100 US ‘Switchblade’ drones heading to Ukraine.”
What makes these drones very effective includes:
- man-portable
- easy to use
- lethal
- disposable
I’m thinking 100 drones is a paltry sum to send, but likely the inventory here in the U.S. is low. These weapons were first used by the United States military in Afghanistan.
As mentioned in the linked article, the weapon fits the tactics that Ukraine is using. In a full-on pitched battle of “force on force” it will be hard for Ukrainian forces to match up with Russian forces. However, the Ukrainians have proven very effective in hit-and-run tactics while taking out armored vehicles and inflicting casualties on their enemies. To a degree, they are fighting a war of attrition to wear down the Russian military and destroy the morale of its soldiers.
The Ukrainian will to fight is their secret weapon. But the will to fight requires actual weapons and ammunition. Let’s hope what is being sent gets delivered and put to good use.
