What Are People Searching for on the Web?

As the coronavirus pandemic grows, SEMrush, a data analytics company, has been tracking and analyzing Google search volume on the topic, and related areas. SEMrush looked at data around top questions about COVID-19, masks, ads, and the most in-demand products as people prepare for self-quarantines and social distancing. See map below.

In addition, as people start to self-quarantine and practice social distancing, SEMrush looked into the impact on food/grocery delivery services.

Sharing SEMrush’s findings below:

Most In-Demand Items:

  1. Hand Sanitizer – 450K searches in February. Searches in March are estimated to increase 3233.33%
  2. Lysol – 165K searches in Feb. Searches in March are estimated to increase 1937.04%
  3. Toilet paper – 90.5K searches in February. Searches in March are estimated to increase 1647.10%
  4. Clorox – 74K searches in February. Searches in March are estimated to increase 834.34%
  5. Paper towels – 49.5K searches in February. Searches in March are estimated to increase 173.20%
Some additional data:

  • in-home doctor visits — 146.15% spike Feb/March
  • in-home medical care — 55.79% spike Feb/March
  • "airport screening temperature” — 733.33% spike in search requests
Food delivery data:

According to SEMrush, over the last three months, the following meal kits/grocery delivery services have experienced the largest increase in search volume:

  1. Daily Harvest – 228.36% increase
  2. Home Chef – 107.96% increase
  3. Green Chef – 90.06% increase
  4. Hellofresh – 65.45% increase
  5. Blue Apron – 49.59% increase
  6. Amazonfresh – 29.09% increase
  7. Instacart – 25.27% increase
  8. Freshdirect – 22.14% increase
According to SEMrush, in the last two weeks, the following food/grocery delivery services are spiking:

  1. Daily Harvest – 68.52% increase
  2. Uber Eats – 53.97% increase
  3. Green Chef – 50.00% increase
  4. Hellofresh – 43.75% increase
  5. Caviar (food delivery) – 39.53% increase
  6. Grubhub – 37.14% increase
  7. Postmates – 32.86% increase
  8. Doordash – 30.72% increase
  9. Instacart – 28.21% increase
  10. Amazonfresh – 20.27% increase
Coronavirus Data:

  • Coronavirus — 86.8M searches in February, which is 2.3 times higher than in January. Searches in March are estimated to increase by 488.23%
  • coronavirus symptoms — 11.7M searches in February, 1.9 times more than in January. Searches in March are estimated to increase by 669.20%
  • What is coronavirus — almost 3M searches, 1.33 times more than in January. Searches in March are estimated to increase by 299.99%
Masks:

  • n95 mask — 3.35M searches in February. Searches in March are estimated to increase by 235%
  • Medical mask — 450K searches in February. Searches in March are estimated to increase by 123.88%
  • Coronavirus mask — 195K searches in February. Searches in March are estimated to increase by 292.73%
    • There’s been a huge spike in searches for masks in Walgreens, Walmart and Home Depot. For example, for Walmart there were 204K searches in February, which is 354% higher than in January.
Advertising:

  • Over the last 30 days, there were 1741 unique ads containing the words “medical masks” or “n95 masks” (compared to only 116 ads over as of Feb. 8 and 477 ads as of Feb. 29)
    • That is an increase of 264.98% from Feb. 29 to March 15
  • There were 79 ads containing the word “coronavirus” specifically from Feb. 28 to March 15 (compared to 41 ads from Feb. 9 to Feb. 29)
