(TNS) — An electric vehicle manufacturer is expanding operations in the South Carolina Upstate.

Proterra, which designs and manufactures zero-emission electric transit vehicles and technology for such vehicles, announced a $76 million expansion that will create more than 200 new jobs in Spartanburg County.

The new operation will make Proterra battery systems for commercial electric vehicles, including delivery trucks, industrial equipment and buses, according to a news release from Gov. Henry McMaster’s office. The expansion will be located at the Carolina Commerce Center in Greer.

“Electric vehicle technology is an opportunity to create clean energy jobs, strengthen American manufacturing and advance the U.S.’s climate leadership on a global scale,” Proterra president Gareth Joyce said in a statement. “Through opening our new battery system production plant, Proterra is proud to help realize these important goals while driving the transition to clean, quiet transportation with our EV technology.”

The Republican McMaster lauded the company’s efforts in the Upstate.

“Today’s announcement by Proterra is further proof that South Carolina is leading the charge in the electric vehicle revolution,” McMaster said in a statement. “We applaud Proterra for the work they’re doing to create a more sustainable future for the transportation industry and look forward to their continued success in the Upstate.”

Earlier this year, another electric vehicle operation announced it would invest some $155 million in Spartanburg County and create 1,000 new jobs. The Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Defense said it planned to locate in the Flatwood Industrial Park and zero-emission battery electric vehicles and fuel-efficient low-emission internal combustion engine vehicles that will be used by the United States Postal Service.
