(TNS) — In an effort to help bridge a digital divide that’s become even more pronounced during the coronavirus pandemic, federal officials soon plan to offer cheaper internet service to low-income households.

The Federal Communications Commission approved the $3.2 billion new initiative last month, prompted by Congress.

It will provide eligible households with monthly discounts of up to $50 for broadband service — up to $75 for those on tribal lands. The program will also offer a one-time discount of up to $100 to buy a computer or tablet.

In a statement announcing the program, FCC Chairwoman  Jessica Rosenworcel  noted that about a third of broadband internet users fear not being able to afford service during the pandemic, according to the Pew Research Center.

“They worry because a cruel virus has upended so much in our economy and so much in our day-to-day life,” she said. “Work, education, healthcare, and more have all migrated online. As a result, it’s more apparent than ever before that broadband is no longer nice-to-have, it’s need-to-have, for everyone, everywhere.”

A household is eligible for the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program if at least one member:

Qualifies for the FCC’s Lifeline program, including those on Medicaid or who accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits

Receives benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch or breakfast programs, or did so in the 2019-20 school year

Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year

Experienced a substantial loss of income since Feb. 29, 2020, and the household had a total income in 2020 below $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 for joint filers

Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income or COVID-19 program

The FCC plans to launch the program by late April. Those who are eligible will be able to enroll through participating broadband providers or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company. More information can be found at https://www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit.
