It will provide eligible households with monthly discounts of up to $50 for broadband service — up to $75 for those on tribal lands. The program will also offer a one-time discount of up to $100 to buy a computer or tablet.
In a statement announcing the program,
“They worry because a cruel virus has upended so much in our economy and so much in our day-to-day life,” she said. “Work, education, healthcare, and more have all migrated online. As a result, it’s more apparent than ever before that broadband is no longer nice-to-have, it’s need-to-have, for everyone, everywhere.”
A household is eligible for the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program if at least one member:
Qualifies for the FCC’s Lifeline program, including those on Medicaid or who accept
Receives benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch or breakfast programs, or did so in the 2019-20 school year
Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year
Experienced a substantial loss of income since
Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income or COVID-19 program
