The app, which is available in Apple's App Store and on Google Play, is primarily used by law enforcement agencies and schools. The county plans to offer real-time alerts and information about local events. The platform also gives users the option of submitting tips to the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office.
Cayuga County Legislature Chairwoman Aileen McNabb-Coleman and Sheriff Brian Schenck announced the app's availability in a joint news release. The leaders said the app is "a powerful tool designed to enhance communication and safety within our community."
They also touted the app's ability to keep the public informed while the Cayuga County Office Building is closed. The building has been closed since late May and will remain shuttered until September.
McNabb-Coleman credited Schenck and Tom Bunn, the county's information technology director, for collaborating on the SaferWatch rollout. Schenck added that he's proud to partner with the Legislature on the public safety initiative.
When users download the SaferWatch app, they can follow setup instructions to customize their alerts. There is no cost to download the app.
