With an eye on Mars, what animal does a new European Space Agency-funded project model its robots after?

Because of the desert-like terrain on Mars, some researchers have concluded that a snake is the best model for a robot built to explore the planet. The European Space Agency-funded SERPEX project is now looking at how such a robot would work in conjunction with a rover vehicle. The project is led by Norwegian research organization SINTEF, with participation from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Space, and the Norwegian Space Centre.
