Can you talk to ChatGPT on your landline?

Answer: Yes (if you still have a landline).

OpenAI wants to make ChatGPT available to a broader user base. Starting Wednesday, you’ll be able to talk with the generative AI bot over the phone if you so choose. Just dial 1-800-CHATGPT, and you’ll get 15 minutes of free calling to converse with ChatGPT.

It works a lot like ChatGPT’s real-time conversational feature Advanced Voice Mode, where users can speak to the bot and it will respond verbally. It can also do things like translate sentences into another language. The 15-minute limit is per phone number per month. OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson confirmed to The Verge that none of the calls will be used to train any of its models.

“[OpenAI’s mission] is to make artificial general intelligence beneficial to all of humanity, and part of that is making it as accessible as possible to as many people as we can,” said Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil. “Today, we’re taking the next step and bringing ChatGPT to your telephone.”
