Can you turn your old smartphone into a tree?

Answer: You can during April.

If April showers bring May flowers, then can April trade-ins bring May trees? Turns out, they can. During the month of April, AT&T is partnering with Assurant and the Arbor Day Foundation to create new life out of old devices.

For every device turned in via AT&T’s trade-in program this month, one tree will be planted in the Placerville Nursery for California Wildfire Reforestation. As the only U.S. Forest Service nursery in California, the Placerville facility’s work is crucial to creating and sustaining healthy forests in the state. This is more important than ever in the wake of the devastating wildfires that have burned throughout the state in recent years.

The companies are ultimately hoping to plant 75,000 new trees. “This Earth Month, our Tree for Trade-In initiative with the Arbor Day Foundation and Assurant symbolizes the power of collective action, as each returned device helps plant a tree, fostering renewal for communities affected by the California wildfires,” said Charlene Lake, AT&T chief sustainability officer and senior vice president of corporate responsibility.
