How does this AI ‘grandmother’ bot fake out phone scammers?

Answer: By keeping scammers on the phone for a long time.

People either enjoy or don’t like calling their grandma if she tends to ramble, but there’s one situation in which a long-winded elderly lady is certainly useful: fooling scammers. UK mobile network operator O2 recently developed an AI-powered voice chatbot that can do just that.

Called Daisy, the bot is powered by an artificial intelligence model that can hold a conversation in real time. It uses a practice called scambaiting to keep scammers talking to it on the phone for long periods of time, therefore reducing the time they can spend trying to talk to actual victims. It sounds just like an elderly person, and has been convincing enough to keep scammers on the phone for upward of an hour.

O2 shared a video demonstrating Daisy’s capabilities, and it is very convincing. It is also highly entertaining to hear the footage of scammers getting frustrated with the rambling sweet old lady.
