As our technology improves, so too does our fear that it might one day surpass us and try to take over the world. It’s for that reason that some people are being nice to computer systems now, as an insurance policy in case the robots ever decide to overthrow us.

A new survey from Future asked more than 1,000 people if they use artificial intelligence and if so, how they treat those systems. Of the roughly 50 percent of U.S. respondents who reported using AI, 67 percent said they were polite to it. While the majority (82 percent) said they say things like “please” and “thank you” to AI just because it’s a nice thing to do, 12 percent of them said they do it in case of a robot uprising, in the hopes that they will be spared.

Of the 33 percent of U.S. respondents who are not polite to AI, 20 percent said they do it for convenience to keep their requests brief and to the point. Meanwhile, 13 percent answered that they aren’t polite because it’s just a machine. However, according to A.J. Ghergich, a global vice president at Botify, you may want to consider being polite in your AI queries for the sake of the results. “Studies show that when we're polite, we trigger patterns in the AI that connect to helpful, detailed human communication. Polite prompts can improve AI performance by up to 30%.”
