Heading into an election year, many were concerned that the latest generative AI models could be used to spread large amounts of convincing misinformation. In the case of Meta and its various social media platforms, it seems we need not have worried.

The company recently shared that AI had a limited impact in spreading false narratives across Facebook, Instagram and Threads. In 2024, “ratings on AI content related to elections, politics, and social topics represented less than 1 percent of all fact-checked misinformation” on these platforms. This included major elections in the U.S., Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, the EU Parliament, France, the U.K., South Africa, Mexico, and Brazil.

“While there were instances of confirmed or suspected use of AI in this way, the volumes remained low and our existing policies and processes proved sufficient to reduce the risk around generative AI content,” Meta said in a blog post.
