It’s not all just cold hard cash, though. Uber is willing to give people $1,000 in the form of cash and credits for alternate modes of transportation if they pledge to not use their car for a month.
The program is based off a similar experiment it conducted in partnership with the Behavioural Insights Team in Australia last year. Participants who agree to ditch their vehicle for four weeks will receive $500 in “Uber Cash” redeemable in the Uber app for car trips, or Lime bike- and scooter-share; a $200 voucher redeemable for car rental or car-share; and $300 across other transportation modes like public transit.
Participants will be required to document their experience so Uber can study the effects. “Many Uber riders tell us they want to live a more car-light lifestyle with a variety of ways to ride, including public transit, shared bikes and scooters, walking, and ride-share,” said Adam Gromis, Uber’s global head of sustainability policy. “This research is critical to help us figure out how to make car-light living possible for more people who want to save money, emissions and time in traffic.”
