Humans, don’t panic (not yet at least). So far it seems that blue light will only accelerate your aging if you happen to be a fruit fly.
A research group at Oregon State University recently conducted a study that found that prolonged exposure to blue light isn’t good for fruit flies. When comparing a group of flies that had been kept in total darkness for 10 or 14 days with ones that had been constantly exposed to blue light, they found evidence of premature aging and neurodegeneration in the blue light group.
“Our research ... suggests that long-time exposure to blue light results in reduced energy production and this is detrimental to cellular health. This conclusion is based on experiments showing that blue light can alter the levels of indispensable metabolites in flies,” senior study author Jadwiga Giebultowicz, a professor at OSU’s Department of Integrative Biology, told Gizmodo.
