Smartphones are everywhere these days, including on the dance floor down at the club. Some locations, however, have proven that the rave vibes can be better if you leave your phone in your pocket. Inspired by a movement in Berlin, nightclubs in Europe have begun instituting bans on using cellphone cameras inside their venues.
At Amber’s in Manchester, England, attendees are given a sticker to put over their phone camera before entering. A doorman double-checks that they’ve complied before allowing them in, and staff inside will ask patrons to put their phone away or to leave if they’re caught using their camera. “On a basic level, as a club, we believe that just having phones away creates a better vibe in the room,” said Jeremy Abbott, an Amber’s director and resident DJ.
For the most part, patrons appear to agree. “The response has been great so far,” Abbott told The Guardian. “People have really respected the concept and kept their phones away, and it has contributed to a much better vibe on the dance floor.”
