How much garbage is in the ocean?

Recent studies are leading researchers to believe that the amount of plastic in our oceans is 10 times more than thought previously. New studies show the ocean may contain more than 250,000 tons of garbage, an increase from estimates made in the 1970s of about 45,000 tons.
