Rumors were flying last week that Facebook was planning to announce a rebranding that included a name change, and it turns out they were all true. As of now, Facebook’s new company name is Meta.
The actual social media platform will retain the Facebook name as a part of the larger Meta brand. And, surprising absolutely no one, the Internet is having a field day roasting the new name. Celebrities, politicians and other companies the world over took to the interwebs to express their thoughts on the new name, some with jokes and others with serious criticism. Twitter even got in on the action, tweeting “BIG NEWS lol jk still Twitter.”
As suspected, the new name is meant to reflect the company’s goals for what it calls the metaverse. “Today we’re seen as a social media company,” Zuckerberg said when he announced the change Thursday, “but in our DNA, we are a company that builds technology to connect people. And the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started.”
