What is the ‘Most Mysterious Song on the Internet’?

Answer: A track called “Subways of the Mind.”

One of the beautiful things about the Internet is its ability to, eventually, solve mysteries. This latest one sure took a while, but the denizens of the World Wide Web just wouldn’t give up, and so now we finally know the actual name of what was dubbed the “Most Mysterious Song on the Internet.”

It all started in 1984 when German radio station NDR1 played a song on its “Music for Young People” program and one listener recorded it. More than two decades later in 2007, that person’s sister uploaded the recording to a number of Internet forums and asked if anyone could identify it. No one could, and after 12 years of searching the recording was shared on Reddit for the first time.

After making the rounds on 44 music subreddits, the track was officially known as r/TheMysteriousSong, but still no one could figure out its real name or where it came from. Then recently, a Reddit user known as marijn1412 came across an old German newspaper article that mentioned the band that created the song, called FEX. They were able to track down one of that band’s former members and confirm that the Most Mysterious Song on the Internet was in fact FEX’s track “Subways Of the Mind.”
