The world’s favorite mapping app will be making some significant changes in the near future. As soon as it becomes official in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) records, Google Maps will change the names of the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali to the Gulf of America and Mount McKinley, respectively.
The announcement of the changes follows an executive order from the new presidential administration to the Secretary of the Interior to rename these landmarks. This is done by changing the names in the USGS Geographic Names Information System, which is updated on a bimonthly basis.
“When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the U.S. quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America,” Google said. Outside of the U.S., users will see both names. “When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too,” the company explained.
