Locating your lost keys isn’t the only thing Apple AirTags are good for. Apparently they can also be used to uncover massive theft operations.

A 43-year-old carpenter from Virginia used the tech recently to help police bust some prolific tool thieves. After a number of his tools had been stolen, he decided to hide the trackers in his remaining tools. When those too went missing, he contacted local law enforcement.

Thanks to the AirTags hidden in the tools, the police were able to track them to a storage locker. Not only did they find a large stash of stolen tools, but they were able to use the discovery to find other stashes. “#HoCoPolice have recovered approximately 15,000 stolen construction tools totaling $3-$5 million in what is believed to be one of the largest and most expansive theft cases in the region in recent years,” the Howard County Police Department said on X.
