What’s the latest application to be taken over by AI?

Answer: Google Maps.

It seems nothing can stop the slow creep of artificial intelligence into, well, everything. And while it’s true that Google Maps has used AI before today, this is a new and more advanced application than it has seen yet.

That’s because generative AI (GenAI) is now on the scene. Beginning this week, Android and iOS users of the popular wayfinding app will get a boost from Google’s GenAI model Gemini. Now when you look for locations, you’ll have the option to receive suggestions or more specific ideas from Gemini.

For example, you could query the bot with “places to go at night with friends” and it will respond with suggestions for venues with live music or popular cocktails. “All of these features are made possible thanks to our Gemini’s powerful creation, reasoning and summarization capabilities — grounded in our trusted data about 250 million places around the world,” Google said in a blog post.
