Where did police find an illegal cryptocurrency mining rig?
Answer: In the crawlspace of a Massachusetts school.
It all started back in December 2021, when the facilities director for the Cohasset Middle/High School in the small Massachusetts town of Cohasset thought something was amiss. After discovering some out-of-place electrical wires and computers, as well as temporary ductwork, the director called the police. Together with the town IT director, detectives uncovered an illegal cryptocurrency mining rig hooked up to the school’s electricity and hidden in a crawlspace.
That was when the Department of Homeland Security got involved, as well as the Coast Guard Investigative Service. They removed the equipment and a thorough investigation was launched. The town’s assistant facilities director, Nadeam Nahas, was eventually charged. In addition to vandalizing the school, he is accused of stealing $18,000 in electricity.
