Alphabet’s Waymo has had approval to operate driverless taxis in San Francisco since last August, but not just anyone could use them. However, after logging more than 3.8 million miles in the city through “tens of thousands of weekly trips” with only a robot behind the wheel, the company’s service is now open to everyone.
Anyone with the Waymo app on iOS or Android will now be able to hail a ride in one of the company’s 300 robotaxis. San Francisco is the second city where Waymo has rolled out access to the general public. In 2022, the company made the service available to anyone in Phoenix, following two years of availability exclusively for Waymo One members.
