Samsung has reigned supreme at the top of the global smartphone market for the last decade, so if anyone was going to dethrone the Korean tech giant, it had to be a company like Apple. Research firm IDC has released its findings for 2023 that saw Apple take the crown from Samsung for the first time since 2010.

According to IDC, Apple made 234.6 million smartphone shipments in 2023, a 3.7 percent increase from 2022. Conversely, Samsung saw a 13.6 percent decline in shipments over the same period, coming in at 226.6 million. That gave the company a 19.4 percent market share compared to Apple’s 20.1 percent.

Coming in third place was Chinese company Xiaomi at a 12.5 percent market share with 145.9 million shipments. Two more Chinese tech companies, OPPO and Transsion, rounded out the top five, respectively. The former had an 8.8 percent market share with 103.1 million shipments, while the latter had 8.1 percent with 94.9 million shipments.
