Instagram and Threads company Meta has put the kibosh on accounts on those platforms that tracked the movements of celebrities’ private jets. Florida college student Jack Sweeney, who operated a majority of them, said his accounts were suspended on Monday.
Sweeney’s accounts used publicly available information to track private flights for high-profile individuals like Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Kim Kardashian, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Kylie Jenner. Earlier this year President Biden signed a bill allowing private aircraft owners to anonymize registration information, one of the main sources for such accounts. However, Sweeney said he was still able to provide the tracking data through tips from other enthusiasts.
“Given the risk of physical harm to individuals, and in keeping with the independent Oversight Board’s recommendation, we’ve disabled these accounts for violating our privacy policy,” a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch.
