Cobb County, Ga., Servers Down Following Unusual Activity

Cobb County Information Technology Services detected unusual activity on a county server and took multiple servers offline to conduct maintenance, according to the county’s communications department.

Cyber Security
(TNS) — Some Cobb County servers were down well into Monday after “unusual activity” detected required servers to be pulled offline for maintenance over the weekend.

Cobb County Information Technology Services detected unusual activity on a county server and took multiple servers offline over the weekend to conduct maintenance, according to a Monday email from the county’s communications department.

Restoration of those servers took longer than expected, the county said, but as of 11:45 a.m. Monday, the county’s website, bill pay services, and phone systems were operating normally.

The county said its court system operated Monday, though some filing systems and non-cash payment services were not available.

The county said it did not have a timeline for total restoration, but advised anyone wishing to schedule a building inspection should call the Community Development Department at 770-528-2060 rather than attempting to schedule online.

Cobb County Communications Director Ross Cavitt did not respond to the MDJ’s query about whether or not the “suspicious activity” was a confirmed hack, how the activity was detected, or when it was detected.

An earlier version of this article stated that the Cobb County Superior Court Clerk’s Office was closed based off a handwritten sign posted on the clerk’s office door Monday morning that stated “due to systems issues the office is closed and will be opened as soon as possible.”

According to the Cobb County Communications Department, Cobb Superior Court Clerk Connie Taylor says her office never closed Monday and “that the sign posted on the door was put up prior to the business day starting.”
