The Appriss alert line, launched by Gov. Paul Patton and the Kentucky State Police, is an automated telephone notification service that calls residents when a registered sex offender moves into the neighborhood. The public is buying into the service. In its first week of operation, the alert line generated more than 3,000 public registrations.
Residents call a toll-free number, provide their own telephone number for notification and list up to three zip codes they want covered. A location change in any of the registered areas triggers the notification to call. When a notification is made the registered citizen is directed to the Kentucky State Police Sex Offender Registry Web page. Citizens without Internet access are encouraged to use free services at local libraries to access the state police sex offender registry.
