The city took impacted systems offline and “the public should expect delays.” According to theRecord, “computers at every Oakland Public Library were reportedly down, forcing librarians to use routing slips to transfer books from branch to branch.”
However, financial data and emergency resources — including 911 and fire services — were unaffected, the city said.
The city is coordinating with law enforcement to investigate the extent and severity of the problem and is working on a response plan.
And this wasn’t the only cyber attack in California last week.
Modesto’s police department reportedly suffered a hack that has prevented officers from using patrol vehicle laptops. This has forced them to revert to making radio calls with dispatchers and taking down notes by hand, rather than communicating electronically via computer systems, for example.
Modesto officials have said they detected “suspicious activity” and disconnected parts of their network as “out of an abundance of caution.” 911 calls and other emergency services remained intact, meanwhile, per the city.
