Parking
(TNS) — Parking kiosks are on their way to the city and will eventually replace downtown’s single stall meters.

The city of Waterloo’s finance committee approved purchasing 21 kiosks for $161,960 Monday. The kiosks will allow parkers to pay by license plate on the machine that resembles an ATM.

The cost includes the price of the products, startup costs, shipping and installation.

There will be a $13,200 monthly recurring cost to pay for the license plate reading technology, data fees and software costs.

Republic Parking, the company that enforces parking rules, will take existing meters out at no extra cost.

The kiosks could arrive within eight weeks but the installation date is unknown. New parking rates and time constraints still have to be decided by the City Council.

Waterloo parking meters

Parking kiosks will replace downtown Waterloo’s single stall meters.

Earlier this month, the council agreed to remove parking meters outside of an area bounded by Washington to Franklin streets in between Park Avenue and Sixth Street.

The areas from Jefferson Street to the Cedar River in between Second and First streets; the Cedar River to Franklin Street in between Park Avenue and Third Street; and the Cedar River to Franklin Street in between Sixth and Seventh streets will not have any meters or time limits.

The few blocks from Jefferson Street to the Cedar River in between Park Avenue and Second Street will now have a three hour time limit with no cost. The only enforcement in this area will be ticketing people who violate the three-hour limit.
