Martorana will replace the previous administration’s federal CIO, Suzette Kuhlow Kent. The position was initially created during the Obama administration, with Vivek Kundra being the first person appointed as federal CIO.
Martorana has spent her more than 20-year career working in both the public and private sector to simplify and improve the digital experience people in interactions with government and businesses. Most recently, she served as CIO of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Prior to that, she worked in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). Her private-sector experience includes Everyday Health and WebMD.
One of the major accomplishments of Martorana’s career was helping to establish the Digital Modernization effort with the DVA. This was done as a member of the U.S. Digital Service team with the intent of offering veterans a better digital experience.
In her new position as federal CIO, it will be up to Martorana to ensure information security and privacy across the federal government, while also helping to advance the new administration’s technology agenda.
