Massachusetts CIO Bill Oates Resigns

Massachusetts CIO Bill Oates has retired, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) reported via Twitter on June 30. Oates began as CIO with the commonwealth in January 2014 after serving as the CIO of Boston for seven years.

In Boston, Oates said he was proud of his ability to foster a culture of innovation “enabled by IT tools.”

Several stories to come out of Massachusetts in recent months include a smart streetlight program deployed in several cities by Silver Spring Networks; a data dashboard called the Massachusetts’ Technology, Talent and Economic Reporting System; and the hire of Deputy Tech Development Czar Katie Stebbins.

The Massachusetts Office of Information Technology did not respond to requests for information about Oates’ replacement or the reason for his departure.
