Steven Martin will step in as chief information officer for Glendale, Ariz. on Oct. 21, bringing leadership experience across the public and private sectors to oversee the city’s technology strategy.
Martin replaces the city’s most recent CIO, Feroz Merchhiya, whose final day in the role was July 12, according to an email from the city’s Media Relations and Communications Coordinator Colleen Sparks. Merchhiya started serving as the new CIO for the city of Santa Monica, Calif., on July 15.
“My career has been dedicated to understanding emerging technologies and cybersecurity practices,” Martin said in a statement. “I look forward to applying those skills in Glendale and continuing the great work the team is accustomed to.”
In the CIO role at the city of more than 250,000, Martin will oversee IT strategy, infrastructure and security. He will consult with departments and conduct program analysis, in an effort to identify and implement solutions that can improve service delivery and better meet the public’s needs.
“He understands the importance of delivering innovative solutions in the ever-changing technology landscape,” Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps said in a statement, citing Martin’s “extensive experience and knowledge” of the ever-evolving technology sector.
The incoming executive was most recently deputy CIO for the city of Austin, Texas, for about three years. It is one of several senior-level IT roles he has held in the public sector according to his LinkedIn profile, including director of IT for the state of Nevada, acting CIO for the city of Las Vegas, and CIO for the Nevada Public Employees’ Benefits Program. In the private sector, he served as vice president, global infrastructure and operations at Global Experience Specialists, and as a senior technology consultant to public- and private-sector organizations.
Martin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in IT from the University of Phoenix and a Master of Science degree in informational technology with an emphasis on engineering from Regis University.
