Fairfax County, Va., has named Matt Harrison as its new CIO and director of the Department of Information Technology.

Harrison is slated to start in his new role as the Northern Virginia county’s leading tech official on April 21. He brings more than two decades of technology leadership experience to the role, most recently serving as director of Information Technology for Stafford County, Va., which is just south of Fairfax County.

During his tenure with Stafford County, Harrison led IT initiatives aimed at progressing service delivery, including modernizing Wi-Fi across government and public safety locations, upgrading digital infrastructure for improved reliability and performance, and integrating Microsoft applications and cloud services.

Before his time in Stafford County, Harrison held leadership positions in the private sector at GEICO Technology Solutions, where he improved web and mobile self-service capabilities through data initiatives, AI and machine learning.

Harrison steps into a role previously held by Gregory Scott, who made a lasting impact on Fairfax County’s tech landscape. During Scott’s time there, Fairfax County earned national recognition, ranking consistently in the Center for Digital Government’s annual Digital Counties Survey.*

Scott told Government Technology in January that he originally hoped to retire sooner, but he agreed to stay on until a successor was in place to ensure a smooth leadership transition.

With Harrison set to take the helm in April, that time has come. He will take the reins on cybersecurity, network infrastructure and tech service delivery for all county departments, while simplifying digital service access for residents to keep Fairfax County on its upward trajectory towards innovation and efficiency.
